THE TOUCH
She reached across to touch my hand,

An act done without thinking.
My pain she did not understand,
But knew my heart was sinking.
She reached across with little thought
To tap a friend in need.
And with her gentle touch she bought
Then planted a tiny seed
That will a difference make
In the life of a hurting one
For as a heart does break
Another returns to God's Son.

KITTY HAWK
Life involves periods of growth.

Growth means changes are coming.
Early feats of growth
Today appear impossible
And astound us with their fragility
As we look at what faces us now.
We tend to forget
That each 747
Began as a bundle of wood and wire
At Kitty Hawk:
A flight
At low altitude,
Of short duration.
But it was the beginning.
So let us remember
That no major "747"
Can occur in our present
Unless there has been
A "Kitty Hawk"
In our past.

THE LAND OF WHAT IF
Ah! The land of What If!

A place within my mind--
A land I'm often tempted by.
What if I'd had perfect parents
(Two of them, not one)?
What if we'd had money
(Enough for all my needs)?
What if I'd married a prince
(Instead of a knave)?
What if...? What if...? What if...?
Oh how tempted I have been
To dwell within this wondrous land!
But I live in the here and now,
A land I did not want.
But where I've been
Is who I am
And so I'd rather choose
The land of Here and Now
As my main abode;
And seldom travel to that land,
The land of might have beens.

AS A KITE
Like a kite in the air

I must know the tension
Of wind pushing
Against the string's pulling
To be able to fly.
Only as long as the string pulls down
Against the wind's upthrusting push
Will a kite remain in flight.
And so being pulled in two directions
Can be what sets me free.
The string of worldly temptations
Pulling against God's upthrusting push
Is what keeps me soaring.
